Staff Fiesta at PBTS

On Tuesday evening, we had a little fiesta for the staff at PBTS. Our chef and friend Rich Pascalli and his wife Sonia catered the event. I came to Rich with the idea of doing a Mexican food feast (a little off the beaten path of a traditional holiday meal), and he was thrilled about creating a menu for us. Let's just say my mouth started watering while reading it, and the actual food was even better than I imagined.

Here is what we feasted on:

Mexican Farmers’ Market Salad with sliced cucumbers, grape tomatoes, red onion, shredded carrots, and crumbled Mexican Farmers’ Cheese, tossed in a basil and garlic vinaigrette.

Homemade Guacamole, Salsa, and Black Bean Dips with homemade corn tortilla chips

Grilled Skirt Steak Enchiladas

Chicken Tacos served with accoutrements of shredded cheese, lettuce, tomato, and sour cream.

Mexican Rice with cumin, sweet onion, cilantro, black beans, and fresh lime juice.

Toasted Coconut Flan with fresh homemade whipped cream and strawberries.

Oh.my.goodness. It was amazing! Here are a few pictures of the spread.

We are so blessed to have an amazing staff, and we all had a great time eating, exchanging secret santa gifts, and playing a few rounds of Catch phrase. We all teased Colby that he practiced at home before he brought it in because he was clearly the champion.

Of course, there were some shenanigans and general merry-making going on as well. Michael proved to be very skilled at the blow gun he received.

Special Discount Thursday and Friday!

This Thursday and Friday, December 8th and 9th, receive a 25% discount on EVERYTHING all day long! All you have to do is bring in a food donation. Food for Thought provides easy-to-eat meals to schoolchildren who may not have enough to eat on the weekends. Their needs increase this time of year because the kids are away from school for over two weeks and unable to eat the school breakfast and lunch.

Please bring one or many of the following items: peanut butter, jelly (no glass jars), pop top (easy to open) chicken or tuna, and no cook, healthy snacks such as crackers, cereal bars, granola bars, fruit cups.

Also, Food for Thought is looking for persons who could donate some fresh items to send home to families for their Christmas meals. If you could provide fresh fruit, vegetables, hams/turkeys, or sweet baked treats, please email them at info@foodforthoughtfl.org

And if you can't make it in Thursday or Friday, no worries! Pizza by the Sea is now a designated drop-off site for Food for Thought. Bring your donations any time!

The Pizza by the Sea Twelve Days of Christmas Contest is here! Here is how it works: Send or bring us your family Christmas card, and we will display it on our walls as part of our Christmas decor. Starting on December 10th, we will randomly choose a card each day for 12 days. That family will win the prize of the day! (Think pizzas, dinners, lunches, t-shirts)

Kids! We Need Help!

We need some pizza ornaments for our YUM tree to jazz it up a bit. And we thought that having kids make us some would be perfect! Can you help us?

Here are the guidelines:

1. The ornament has to be in the shape of a whole pizza or pizza slice.
2. It can be no bigger than about 4 inches in width (we want to fit a lot of ornaments on the little tree!)
3. We would like the child's name on it!
4. It would be very helpful if you included some sort of way to hang the ornament (ribbon or yarn would work fine).

Get creative! They can be made from tin can lids, oatmeal lids, cardboard, paper... you name it! Have the kids decorate their ornaments and bring them in to put on our tree. The tree will be up after Thanksgiving. Or, if you live far away, you can just mail it to us!

We will be posting pictures of the ornaments as they come in! We can't wait to see what the kids create ! (and keep in mind, they don't have to be masterpieces: we just want them to have fun!)

Alaqua Animal Refuge Benefit Day!

All of our animals have been rescued from shelters, and we know how difficult it can be for these organizations to continue to care for these homeless animals as the number of them keeps rising.

We would like to encourage everyone to come out on Tuesday in support of Alaqua Animal Refuge, the local no-kill home for animals . You can check out their website here.

We will give 20% back to Alaqua for every ticket that says "Alaqua" when they check out! Such an easy way to make a big difference.

New Soup for You!

I don't know about you, but I love a good bowl of soup, especially when it's a bit chilly outside.
We have two new soups for you to try at PBTS: Baja Chicken Enchilada and Loaded Baked Potato.
MMM, mmm, mmm. They are both delicious.

Try them on their own, or with a salad, a breadstick, or even a slice of pizza at lunch! Other flavors we frequently offer include shrimp and corn chowder, tomato basil bisque, chili, and mushroom brie.

Here at Pizza by the Sea, we believe in supporting local outreach programs and ministries, especially those benefiting children. Right now, Food for Thought, one such program, is holding their Back to School Food drive.

Basically, this program sends home backpacks of easy to prepare food with school children who may not have access to healthy meals on a regular basis. We would like to help fill up these backpacks by donating a bunch of these items to Food for Thought, so that their office is filled to the brim!

So here is the deal: On Thursday, August 18th (after 3 p.m.), bring in one or more of these items listed below, and you will get 50% off of your pizzas! It's a win-win situation-- you get a delicious and amazingly cheap dinner, and Food for Thought gets its pantry filled!

One of the things we love about living here is that we get to see many friends who vacation in the area. We had dinner at PBTS with some of our very good friends from Dallas and their kids, who are vacationing in Seaside. While the adults had a relaxing dinner, the kids had fun goofing around and eating lots and lots of pizza.

Today we would like you all to meet our fantastic manager, Roy. Let's just say it was not easy to get Roy to pose for a picture-- he is a bit camera-shy (Ha!) This week we got to see some friends we met in Dallas but haven't seen in 9 years. We were all part of a "Young Married Couples" Sunday School Class at Highland Park UMC. It was fun to meet each other's kids who we have only seen in pictures. As you can see, they had a blast!

Reunited!

After 3 months of living apart, our family is finally together again! Jason, Alex and Pepper the black lab arrived Tuesday with our UHaul of stuff, and Caroline, my sister Lori, the cat, the bunny, and I arrived yesterday. We are slowly unpacking and arranging things in our new home, but we are just happy to be under the same roof!

Thanks to Dylan, Jared, and Nick (PBTS staff) for helping move some of the heavy stuff and save Jason from a back injury! And thanks to all of you for your well-wishes as we have been in the process of being the new owners and relocating our family to the area. We are looking forward to meeting you soon!

Finally, thank you for your patience as the blog has been a bit sporadic with my orchestrating the move. I will be back on the ball soon!

Lighthouse Family Retreat

We were so fortunate to host 10 couples from the Lighthouse Family Retreat program at PBTS last evening. Lighthouse was founded to serve families living through childhood cancer, and to help them enjoy family time together and find hope in God. What an amazing ministry! Meet Shafer!

It's time to meet one of our bussers, Shafer! Bussers play such an important role in the operation of the restaurant-- they have to be on-the-ball, good communicators, and friendly to the customers. They have to be watchful to make sure that the customers needs are being met. And Shafer does an awesome job at all of these things! And if you have met Shafer, you know that he is TALL! (he plays basketball, of course.) Jason shared with me one cool thing that Shafer can do because of his height is reach into the kitchen through the window and grab any size box he needs (the rest of us would have to walk around to do it!) We are proud to have him as part of the staff at PBTS. Thanks, Shafer, for all of your hard work!

As some of you may know, the female half of the PBTS team (me) is still living in Indiana while our kids finish the school year. The male half of the team sometimes, ahem, forgets to take pictures of all the fun going on at the restaurant. So I am enlisting your help, dear blog friends.

Hello Everyone! Just wanted to say thank you to everyone for making our first week at Pizza by the Sea so enjoyable! We would like to thank Bryan and Stacy for making the transition go so smoothly and for being super to work with during this process. Also, we would like to thank our employees! Hello Friends,

We hope you know by now how very much we appreciate you. When we opened Pizza by the Sea almost four years ago, you helped us build a business of which we are extremely proud. We have won awards and even had celebrities visit us, but our overwhelming accomplishment has been the friendships we've made with all of you. The kindness and support you've shown us will forever be in our hearts.

It is time to turn over our business to one of the nicest families we know. The Beer family is relocating to our area from Indiana and has been vacationing here for years. They've also been huge fans of Pizza by the Sea! We are excited for you to meet them, and they were kind enough to tell us a little about their family so you can get to know them {see below}.

We are excited to introduce The Beer Family...

{In Kristi's words} Jason and I both grew up in Indiana, met at Purdue University, married, then moved to Dallas, Texas where Jason pursued a graduate degree at SMU and I was an English teacher at Highland Park Middle School. After living in Texas for six years and the birth of our first child, Alex, we decided to move back to Indiana to be closer to family. Jason started his own business, investing in and managing various small businesses and real estate, while I was primarily a stay-at-home mom to Alex and our daughter, Caroline, and school and church volunteer. After living for almost a decade in the beautiful lakes area of northern Indiana, it still was our dream to own a business near the beach in which we both could use our talents. After praying and talking about it for many months, we decided to take the plunge!

We have been visiting the 30A area for many years as tourists, and we thought it would be a wonderful place to raise our family and own a business together. We are so excited to be the new owners of Pizza by the Sea and will strive to carry on Bryan and Stacy's tradition of providing customers with great pizza, superb customer service, and a fun, family-friendly atmosphere.

The Beer family looks forward to meeting your family and becoming a part of the SoWal community! Here are a few fun facts so you can get to know us better:

Jason: loves golfing, slow cruises around the lake in the boat, 80's music, and traveling (We applied to be on “The Amazing Race” but didn't get chosen.)
Kristi: loves writing, blogging, reading, cooking (I'm Italian!), taking walks, and watching Survivor
Alex: our energetic 9 year old boy who loves doing anything outdoors, especially golfing and sailing, doing science experiments, and playing anything electronic. He also loves playing jazz tunes on the keyboard.
Caroline: our spunky 6 year old daughter who loves dancing, singing, the colors orange and pink, golfing with her dad, and stuffed animals

Going Green by the Sea

Did you know that our pizza boxes are environmentally friendly? They are also really cool! The Green Box, made of recycled cardboard and designed to reduce waste, looks like any other pizza box, but it contains 100 percent recycled content. It is also convertible.

The top of the box is perforated so it can be torn into four squares. These can be used instead of paper plates or dishes that would need to be washed, and the bottom of the box can be folded in half for storing pizza instead of using aluminum foil or containers. At Pizza by the Sea, we hope to reduce our carbon footprint one pizza box at a time! {Stay tuned for more ways we're going green.}

Christmas with the Cousins

Did you have a great Christmas?? We sure did. We got to spend it with family at Disney World. The cousins stopped here during their long drive from Texas to eat at Pizza by the Sea. The kids had so much fun playing {indoors because it was freeeeeezing}, and we were all impressed with Carson's amazing Etch a Sketch drawing. I think we have a future architect on our hands!

So what do Pizza by the Sea employees eat at their annual Christmas party? Nope, not pizza. Chef Rich's cuisine, of course! Our own Rich {who happens to be culinary-school trained and even owns his own catering company} impressed with a menu fit for a fine dining restaurant. The food was ah-ma-zing! After finishing the world's best cake, the group exchanged silly gifts and played games. Such a fun night. We've said it many times, but we believe there isn't a better group of employees around. We couldn't be more grateful for each one of them.
